Her first appearance as an actor in 1997, at the age 13 years old. In 1997, after taking numerous courses and carrying out background work in Canadian shows such as Road to Avonlea and Harriet the Spy She was able to get her first acting role on the Canadian kids' horror anthology Goosebumps and Are you afraid of the Dark?, both series were broadcast on YTV. Matthew Goode was also in the film. Vandervoort's TV career started with CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. She then landed the part of Clark Kent's Kryptonian Cousin "Kara Kent", (the woman who would become Supergirl) on The CW serial-drama program Smallville. In season 7, she was a regular in the series. She was featured in "Bloodline" which was the eighth season's episode. The show returned to Smallville for two additional episodes throughout the last season, which was also her 10th season.
